Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project (KOSAP)
The KOSAP is a World Bank funded project which is jointly being implemented by the Ministry of Energy, REREC and KPLC targeting 14 counties in the North and North Eastern Region of Kenya which are far away from the grid.
The scope entails construction of 121 solar mini-grids, solarization of 380 boreholes and installation of 1,100 standalone solar systems on public facilities. The Corporation is implementing 59 of these mini-grids with a total capacity of 4,932kW and potential to connect ten million customers.
The project seeks to close the access gap by providing electricity services to remote, low density, and traditionally underserved areas of the country. The project has been registered under Clean Development Mechanism and will earn additional revenue from Carbon trading. The mini-grid component being implemented by the Corporation has the potential of contributing 2,012 tonnes of carbon emission reduction as most of the households are currently using kerosene.
Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) has an expanded mandate of spearheading Kenya’s green energy drive, in addition to implementing rural electrification projects.
